Beautiful new set from Matthew Shaw just in time for the solstice weekend in a signed hand-numbered edition of only 21 copies, exclusive to VT: Alchemical Figure: Summer builds on Shaw’s previous Spring Equinox release with drone formulations that draw heavily on Reverse English traditions and use occult site-specific area sonorities as a basis for heady re-statements of smeared, microtone-thick glacial movements. Here he conjures distant, lunar percussive sounds and almost-music box melodies in a way that comes over like the more devotional mirror sides – especially Nights – while singing in a lucid, to the moon style that combines the holy/holy approach of John Balance with the organic body soundings of prime Axolotl. The whole deal comes wrapped in full-colour artwork by Matthew himself. Recommended.
